Opening Salvo

CEBU, Philippines - The opening salvo of the religious activities of the Sinulog 2013 is scheduled on Thursday with the first day of the nine-day novena masses and the traditional walk with Jesus at dawn.

Thousands of Catholics and members of the clergy are expected to converge at Fuente Osmeña for the penitential walk to the Basilica del Sto. Niño at 4:30 a.m. on January 10.

The first of the nine-day novena masses will be held at 5:30 a.m. immediately after the penitential walk wherein this year’s Hermano and Hermana Mayores will be installed by Rev. Fr. Jonas Mejares, OSA.

This year’s feast of the Sto. Niño has a theme “Journeying Together in Faith with Sto. Niño”.

The traditional nine-day novena masses before the Sinulog will be sponsored by the different government and non-government organizations, schools and universities, praying communities as well as the different parishes in the archdiocese of Cebu.

The following are the daily schedules for the novena mass; 5:30, 7:00, 8:30, 10:00, and 11:00 in the morning, 1:00, 2:30, 4:00, 5:30 and 7:00 in the afternoon.

DRIED DANGGIT FISH

You are not a Cebuano, when you will not eat this well famed delicacy, the Dried Danggit Fish. Priced at P450 to 500 pesos per kilo, this food is much expensive than the beef and pork. When fried, the crispiness of the taste will be a delight to the one eating it.

Sinulog Festival 2013

The Sinulog festival is one of the grandest, most distinguished and most colorful festivals in the Philippines. The major festival is held each year on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City to honor the Santo Niño, or the child Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu (since in the Catholic faith Jesus is not a saint, but God). It is fundamentally a dance ritual which remembers the Filipino people's pagan past and their recognition of Christianity.

The festival features some the country's most colorful displays of ceremony and pageantry: participants clothe in bright-colored costumes dance to the rhythm of drums and native gongs. The streets are generally lined with vendors and pedestrians all wanting to witness the street-dancing. Smaller versions of the festival are also held in different parts of the province, also to celebrate and honor the Santo Niño. There is also a Sinulog sa Kabataan, which is performed by the youths of Cebu a week before the Grand Parade.

Recently, the cultural event has been commercialized as a tourist attraction and instead of traditional street-dancing from locals, Sinulog also came to mean a contest highlighting groups from various parts of the country. The Sinulog Contest is traditionally held in the Cebu City Sports Complex, where most of Cebu's major provincial events are held.

The Festival

The celebration traditionally lasts for nine days, ending on the ninth day when the Sinulog Grand Parade reveals. The day before the parade, the Fluvial Procession, a water-parade, held at dawn from the Mandaue City wharf to Cebu City wharf with the Santo Niño carried on a pump boat decorated with hundreds of flowers and candles. The procession ends at the Basilica where a re-enactment of the Christianizing of Cebu follows. In the afternoon, a more formal procession takes place along the major streets of the city, which last for hours due to large crowd participating in the religious event.

On the feast day, at the Basilica, a Pontifical Mass is held, given by the Cardinal with the assistance of several bishops of Cebu. The majority of the city’s population and devotees would flock to the Basilica to attend the mass before heading out to the streets to watch the Parade.

WEATHER officials warned of slight rains and cold temperature in Metro Cebu on New Year’s Eve tonight as a cold front affects some areas in the extreme northern part of the country.
Officials from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Mactan office advised shoppers and anyone with plans to go walking out on New Year’s Eve to bring with you raincoats and umbrellas, after a tail-end of a cold front was spotted.
While most of the weather disturbances are affecting some Northern Luzon areas like Cagayan Valley, Metro Manila, Metro Cebu and the rest of the country will not be spared from the occasional rain showers and thunderstorms, said Boy Artiaga, Pagasa Mactan weather observer 4.
But Artiaga adds that while the cold front will be bringing rains in Cebu and its neighboring islands, no major weather disturbances were spotted within the country’s territory.
A gale warning has also been issued within the Northern Luzon area, affecting both seaboards.
Pagasa warns of strong gale force winds in the northern seaboards of Northern Luzon, particularly Batanes, Calayan, Babuyan Cagayan and Isabela.
A warning was also issued for the western seaboard of the same area, particularly in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and La Union.
Pagasa warns of rough to very rough sea conditions within the areas mentioned. Small seacraft, particularly small fishing boats, are advised not to venture out into sea while the gale warning remains up.

Lantaw Floating Native Restaurant

Lantaw promises to be a great addition to the ‘native’ category of restaurants…. a category where quality has not always been easy to find, surprisingly.
Well, you’ll find quality here. Lantaw is the Cebuano term for “can be seen from a distance” and aside from the fact that the restaurant is actually floating, diners can also enjoy a spectacular view of the hills and city of Cebu in the distance. It is of course open so natural sea breezes will keep you cool while the salt water ‘scent’ acts as a natural prop to this wonderful stage. The menu boasts a number of mouthwatering native dishes but clearly fresh fish is the order of the day.
